Drives and Controls for Helicopter Traversing System used in Naval Warships were successfully developed by Eddy Current Controls (India) Limited in 1994. This consists of a Drive cum Brake unit with an Electronic Control Module along with Control Panel, Control Desk, Junction Box, Cable Reel and Portable Control Box.
The Drive is intended to Pull In and Pull Out the Helicopter Securing And Traversing (HSAT) System. This becomes extremely difficult when the ship is mid sea because the ship may sway due to wave and wind forces which are highly unpredictable. The drive and brake should act in tandem according to the positive and negative loads acting on the HSAT System.
The above system is used for successful landing and securing of Helicopters on Landing and securing a chopper on the deck of a ship is quite difficult. For example the ship in the mid sea may sway due to wave and wind forces which are highly unpredictable.Hence to avoid rolling or other movement, the helicopter as it descends, has to be acquired and safely moved into the Hanger.
The helicopter which is acquired on the landing grid is pulled to the hanger using steel ropes through rails mounted on the ship deck.The speed of the Traversing system is controlled using the Eddy Current Drive / Brake Coupler
Our Drives and Control System met all stringent quality standards set by Indian Navy and is presently installed on six Naval Warships.
The basic system supplied by us consists of the following:
- Eddy Current Drive / Brake Coupler unit with Flame Proof Motor
- Control Cabinet housing electrical control gear and electronic module
- Wall mounted Control Desk with Joystick and Dead Man Push
We had successfully supplied 3 units to Indian Navy and hold orders on hand. Further orders for more units is in the pipeline. As claimed by DGQA cost of imported Helo Traversing System will be Rs.20 crores whereas the indigenisation has cost only Rs 4 crores.
